Overcoming Rejection and Creating Value in Your Connections (Turning “Nos” into Acknowledgements)

Let me paint this picture for you…

You are sitting behind your computer, cozy with a cup of coffee (or tea-pick your favorite), and are ready to crush the day because you have gone through your daily rituals, gratitude practice, journaling, a workout, whatever gets you in the right mindset.

You have a full planner in front of you with your 2024 goals and at the TOP of your list is finding a new job or pivoting from your current job in the new year.

You open your computer to access your email, praying you get one of those “we would love to set up an interview with you”.. responses from all the emails and applications sent yesterday.

You hold your breath as your email loads, closing your eyes for a few seconds only to open them to an empty inbox with NO replies to your strategic outreach or a big fat rejection letter from an ATS system kindly letting you know “they are reviewing other candidates at this time, but thank you for your interest”.   Raise your hand if you have gotten that message before.

Your heart sinks, the frustration begins to build, and your vibes start to go off the rails from your morning ritual.

WHEN AM I EVER GOING TO GET NOTICED (you internally scream or scream out loud, you do you).

Emotions overcome you, and you start mind spiraling, I am worthless, no one notices me, I am never going to get a new job, and the cycle begins of rage applying to jobs you know you will hate but why not, apply to anything and everything because it is a numbers game, right (wrong but more on that later).

You go into LinkedIn and get mad at the individuals who did not reply to you and start to randomly *click to add* to your network on LinkedIn without adding any message to ask for a specific reason why you are looking to add them.

And so it goes…. full-on “I give up” mode sets in.

If you have ever been through a process like this, I am sure your PTSD may be setting in… but ALAS, You can break this cycle my friends and I am here to help!

As I am never one to sugar coat a message, living this firsthand as an agency recruiter for many many years (and still to this day), there is NO doubt that embarking on a job search in the new year coming off a very turbulent end to 2023 can be a challenging journey filled with high highs and low lows.

In some moments you feel you are getting all the interviews and attention and the next you cannot land a final interview to save your life or always feel like you are the “backup candidate” #2 choice.

You also could downright be feeling completely ignored and getting no traction.. which honestly can feel like job search rock bottom.

In today’s job search strategy, you must be armed with resilience, perseverance, and a heck of a thick skin as you navigate this process which inevitably involves facing constant rejection, a challenge that many professionals are encountering more and more these days which can send you into a downward spiral of despair.

My advice for you is not to dwell on what you cannot control but to focus your energy on proactive strategies to overcome setbacks and how you can bring value to every connection when you are sending that email or hitting the “Apply Here" button.

These are some tried-and-true 5 STEP MINDSET SHIFT you can implement to cultivate an approach to the job application process from the lens of value creation that can not only enhance your job search but also contribute positively to your professional network (without wearing hiring managers or yourself down).

STEP ONE: The Entitlement Spiral:

Shifting from “What can I get out of this vs. What can I offer to this conversation”?

Refine Your Approach: Rather than expecting opportunities, shift your mindset to what value you can bring to the table.

Actionable Step: Craft your outreach messages with a focus on what you can offer, aligning your skills with the needs of the company or professional contact.

STEP TWO: Avoid a Transactional Mentality:

Treat networking like a Two-Way Street!

Refine Your Approach: Networking isn't just about getting something; it's about building mutually beneficial relationships.

Actionable Step: Prioritize learning about the other person's experiences and goals, seeking opportunities for collaboration and shared growth.

STEP THREE: Embracing Humility in Outreach:

Kindness, Compliments and Appreciation will take you a long way.

Refine Your Approach: Acknowledge that everyone's time is valuable, and your initial outreach should showcase humility and a genuine desire to learn.

Actionable Step: Include a brief, sincere acknowledgment of the recipient's expertise, podcast episode you loved, a book you have read they authored or any other factual achievements in your outreach emails.

STEP FOUR: Demonstrate Your Value Through Research:

Know your stuff beyond what you can just google online.

Refine Your Approach: Showcase your understanding of the company and industry, proving your genuine interest.

Actionable Step: Reference specific details about the company's recent achievements or challenges in your outreach, demonstrating your informed approach.

STEP FIVE: Proactively Offer of Assistance:

How can you add value in ways to serve others?

Refined Approach: Express your willingness to contribute, whether through sharing industry insights, participating in relevant projects, or offering support in any way possible.

Actionable Step: Clearly communicate your availability and openness to collaboration, emphasizing a genuine desire to be a valuable resource.

AS AN EXTRA BONUS:

I am sharing with you a sample template that can help you build a more meaningful connection between the receiver and warrant a reply.  Edit in your own tone and voice as you choose, but it is a great starting off point for inspiration. Try using this in your next outreach email and let me know how it goes!
